The Challenge

Alex Beattie appeared on ITV’s Love Island in 2017 and with that his personal brand grew in popularity. Fake accounts were set up in his name, particularly on platforms where he didn’t have a regular presence.

He has since gone on to launch a successful personal fitness brand (Achievable Academy), and build his profile as a model.

Alex came to us looking to tackle fake accounts impacting on his personal brand on social media. Ultimately, he needed our help to protect his reputation on social.

He tasked Neon Caffeine with;

  • Identifying impersonator social media accounts

  • Standardising account naming across all social media platform

  • Advising on social media platform verification processes

Our Approach

We conducted manual searches on each social platform to identify potential impersonation accounts, resulting in discovering four Twitter and two TikTok accounts.

We developed a naming convention for Alex, based around his core Instagram account (@alex.beattie). This account is already verified and it was prudent not to impact on its status. Where available, we have updated account names to reflect the naming convention.

Finally, we audited Alex’s accounts against published verification criteria to position them for future verification (platform dependent).

Outcome

We had 100% success with reporting the fake accounts on TikTok and Twitter, with all six removed.

Alex’s TikTok account name was updated and is now in line with his Instagram account name. These are his two priority platforms, and looking consistent is important to him.

We’re continuing to work with Alex on the longer term goals for this review, monitoring for risks on a regular basis. We’ll also keep him up to date regarding opportunities for account verification.

In the client's words

I'd been putting off the task of reporting the fake profiles, as I didn't really know the process to sort it out. Rob at Neon Caffeine made the process easy, and took away the headache of reporting the fakes. I feel confident that my online presence is in a much better place than before
